Police are cautioning Austin neighborhood residents after someone tried to lure a girl into a vehicle as she walked to school Wednesday morning.

About 7 a.m., the girl was walking to school in the 800 block of North Lamon when a white SUV tried to block her path as she crossed the street, according to an alert from Area North detectives.

The suspect — a black male wearing a mask that covered his whole face but his eyes — got out of the SUV and told the girl to get inside, police said. The girl ran off and the male followed her in the SUV for two blocks before turning down an alley.

The suspect had gray hair in an Afro, brown eyes and was wearing a black t-shirt and pants, police said.

The SUV was white and may have been a Chevrolet Suburban, police said. The paint was peeling off the upper part of the vehicle.

Anyone with information on the luring attempt is asked to call Area North detectives at (312) 744-8200.
