No bond for man charged with home invasion, double murder in West Elsdon

A man charged with invading a Southwest Side home and killing the two residents, then setting the building ablaze before leaving Thursday afternoon has been ordered held without bond.

Jose Guzman, 20, faces two counts each of first-degree murder, home invasion causing great bodily harm, aggravated arson causing bodily harm and one count of robbery armed with a dangerous weapon, all felonies, according to a statement from Chicago Police.

About 2:50 p.m., Carlos Herrera, 22, and 49-year-old Maria Herrera were found dead after a fire at their home in the 3600 block of West 55th Place, authorities said.

An autopsy Friday found that Carlos Herrera died of multiple stab wounds and ruled his death a homicide, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Autopsy results for Maria Herrera were inconclusive pending further investigation.

Guzman, of the 3800 block of West 55th Place, was taken into custody after detectives determined he was responsible for the deaths, police said. He set a couch on fire before he left the home.

On Sunday, Guzman was ordered held without bond.
