Man killed in Summit shooting

A man was shot to death in southwest suburban Summit on Saturday.

Officers responded to a call of shots fired in the 5300 block of South 74th Avenue a few minutes after 9 a.m. and discovered 21-year-old Dakota Smith shot in the chest, according to Summit police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Smith, of the 6000 block of South Archer in Summit, was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:13 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.

An autopsy Sunday ruled his death a homicide.

Police said the shooting appears to be gang-related. No suspects were in custody as of Monday morning.

Summit police are investigating along with the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force.
