Cubs prospect Javier Baez ejected again from minor-league game

Cubs prospect Javier Baez was ejected from a minor-league game Tuesday after voicing his displeasure with an umpire who reversed a home run call.

According to the Des Moines Register, Baez hit a pitch in the third-inning down the foul line that was originally ruled a home run. After the umpires conferred, though, the call was reversed to a foul ball.

Iowa manager Marty Pevey was tossed for arguing the ruling. Baez flew out to end the at-bat, then got himself tossed for making his displeasure known to the umpire.

It’s hardly the first time Baez has flashed a temper during minor-league games. Baez was ejected from a game in April of 2014 for arguing a check-swing appeal. He waved off the umpire and threw his hands up to earn the ejection.

His teammates let him know that his behavior was unacceptable, and an argument with catcher Eli Whiteside ensued.

“I was mad, he was mad, everybody was mad,” Baez told the Des Moines Register. “We argued a little. Nothing personal.”

Cubs president Theo Epstein and then-manager Rick Renteria viewed the episode as a learning experience.

Baez was ejected at least two times back in 2013, too, when he was at Double-A Tennessee.

Baez has played just six games at Triple-A Iowa this season after being sent back down by the Cubs after struggling in his 2014 debut and a similarly rough Cactus League showing. He missed the first few weeks of the season to be with family after the death of his sister.

In his six games this year, Baez has posted a .261/.320/.478 slash line. He’s hit one home run and has two RBIs.

Baez entered the 2014 season as the top prospect in the Cubs organization.
