The Cubs made a number of roster moves Wednesday, starting with the activation of relief pitcher Justin Grimm from the 15-day disabled list.
The Cubs also recalled outfielder Matt Szczur from Triple-A Iowa, optioned Junior Lake to Iowa and designated reliever Anthony Varvaro for assignment.
The Cubs have made four pairs of moves in the last two days, mostly geared toward the beleaguered bullpen. They optioned Gonzalez Germen to Triple-A on Tuesday. Varvaro spent only one day with the team and did not appear in Tuesday’s game.
Grimm and Szczur will be available for Wednesday night’s game against the Cardinals in St. Louis.
Grimm landed on the DL April 10 with right forearm inflammation. He made one rehab appearance Monday, throwing a scoreless inning with a walk and two strikeout at Nashville. Grimm has yet to make his 2015 Cubs debut.
Szczur is making his second stint with the Cubs this season. He batted .200 with one RBI in eight games before being optioned to Triple-A on April 19.
Lake is hitting .286 with one double and one RBI in four games with the Cubs this season.
