A man stole a woman’s iPhone and tried to sexually assault her in an alley Tuesday night in the West Town neighborhood.

The woman, 29, was walking in the 500 block of North Marshfield about 11:35 p.m. when the man grabbed her and led her to an alley, Area Central detectives said in a community alert.

He stole her phone and tried to sexually assault her there, the alert said. He ran away eastbound across Ashland Avenue when she began to yell for help, and citizens who heard her cries for help called 911.

The suspect is described as a black man between 18 and 25 years old, 5-foot-5 and 140-160 pounds with black hair, the alert said. He was wearing a gray zigzag design hooded sweatshirt and black pants.

Anyone with information is asked to contact detectives at (312) 745-6110.
