Maine Township school bus overturns after crash with SUV

A northwest suburban school bus overturned in a crash Friday morning, and the driver and four passengers were taken to a hospital for observation.

The crash happened about 7:40 a.m. at the intersection of Des Plaines Avenue and Hamlin Avenue in Park Ridge, according to Park Ridge police. The bus was heading to Maine South High School.

A 2009 Chevy school bus van was traveling west on Des Plaines and was about halfway through the intersection when the crash occurred. A 2005 Cadillac Escalade SUV, heading south on Hamlin, “struck the passenger side, rear wheel area of the bus causing it to roll onto its side,” a statement from police said.

Police said there “no visible injuries,” but there was one complaint of back pain. The driver and four passengers were taken to hospitals as a precaution.

Maine Township High School District 207 contacted the families of students involved.

The driver and three passengers in the SUV were not injured, police said. The 17-year-old driver was cited with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.
