Former doctor accused of sex assault now charged with growing pot

A former west suburban doctor charged with sexual assault last year is facing new charges after authorities allegedly caught him growing marijuana in his home.

The North Central Narcotics Task Force executed a search warrant Thursday at the home of Mark G.P. Lewis in the 0-99 block of Squire Lane in St. Charles, according to the Kane County state’s attorney’s office.

During the search, officers found 199 marijuana plants, 11,772 grams of processed marijuana, a handgun and ammunition, a statement from prosecutors said. The street value of the marijuana and plants seized is estimated at more than $600,000.

Lewis is charged with possession of cannabis, possession of cannabis with intent to deliver, production of cannabis plants, and possession of a firearm with a revoked FOID card, all felonies, prosecutors said. He’s also charged with a misdemeanor count of possession of ammunition without a FOID card.

In July 2014, Lewis was charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault and criminal sexual assault, according to the state’s attorney’s office. Prosecutors alleged he had sex with a former patient without consent in 2012.

His bail was set at $250,000 in that case, and he was released after posting $25,000 bond. But after the marijuana charges were filed, Circuit Judge John Barsanti revoked Lewis’ bond in the sexual assault case, prosecutors said. His bond for the drug charges was set at $1 million, and he will be required to prove that any bail money comes from a legitimate source.

Lewis is being held at the Kane County Jail, and his next court appearance in both cases is set for May 13.
