HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Two police officers were shot and killed Saturday night in downtown Hattiesburg, and a manhunt was under way for the killer.

The identities of the officers were not immediately released.

The shooting occurred around 8 p.m.

The officers were taken to Forrest General Hospital, where they were confirmed dead. At least one officer was still alive when he was brought there, officials said.

Law enforcement officials said they were still looking for the shooter, who took an officer’s car, which was later found abandoned behind a train depot.

It was the first time a Hattiesburg officer has been killed since 1984.

Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree said is asking residents to remain at home and inside while authorities search for the suspect.
