The MLB Draft is on June 10, and the fans think the Cubs need more pitching prospect in the farm system, but president Theo Epstein and player development director Jason McLeod will stand by their own strategy; picking the best available player.

McLeoad told MLB.com writer Carrie Muskat that the Cubs will always look to bring back as much talent as possible during the draft, they don’t look at the position.

You’ve heard us talk about it being our Super Bowl, said scouting and player development director Jason McLeod. It’s the one day of the year we can choose the players who come in and hopefully impact the organization. We’ve never been a team that drafts on the need of the Major League team. We’ll pick the best player for the organization, not the needs of the Major League club.

Epstein said people were surprised the Cubs selected Kyle Schwarber in last year’s draft, but he likes how the young catcher is panning out. Schwarber is hitting .327 with 12 home runs and 31 RBI.

The Cubs president thinks this year there isn’t as much talent at the top of the draft.

It’s not as clear-cut at the top of the Draft this year, Epstein said. Some of the higher-profile talents got injured, and it’s just one of those Draft classes that’s a little bit all over the place, which makes it more difficult, but also creates opportunity.

The Cubs hold the ninth pick in the first round.
