Thunderstorms, flooding possible Wednesday evening in Cook and Will counties

A thunderstorm Wednesday evening could bring torrential rain and wind damage to some southwest suburbs, according to forecasters.

One storm was located over southwest suburban Justice as of 6:20 p.m. and moving east, according to the National Weather Service. It could bring “torrential rain” to parts of Chicago and some south and southwest suburbs in Cook County.

Another is over southwest suburban Lockport in Will County and moving southeast.

Both storms could pack 60 mph wind gusts and hail between a quarter and half-dollar in size, forecasters said. Strong winds could also damage roofs, siding and trees.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for parts of Cook and Will counties until 7 p.m.

East-central Cook County will remain under a flash flood warning until 6:10 p.m. because of the heavy rains expected.

Parts of Chicago, Oak Lawn, Blue Island, Alsip, Hinsdale, Midlothian, Justice and several other south and southwest suburbs could see flooding, as could Midway Airport, the weather service said.

Officials are cautioning anyone who encounters a flooded road Wednesday night to turn around, as most flood deaths happen in vehicles.
