Next week a “.sucks” domain will be made available to anyone willing to pay $250 annually. Sounds like harmless fun for the most part, unless someone takes aim at your company brand.

For that reason, some local companies, including the Chicago Blackhawks, will pay 10 times the $250 to keep the “sucks” domain off the internet, according to a report by Brigid Sweeney in Crain’s Chicago Business.

Sweeney writes:

So far, Chicago entities including McDonald’s, Edelman and the Chicago Blackhawks have ponied up the $2,500 (which must be paid annually) to claim their .sucks sites and deny someone else the opportunity to exploit them.

Vox Populi, the company selling the domain, has offers that go as low as $10 per month for the URLs, which really sucks for companies trying to protect their name.
