Hollywood insiders were busy buzzing Monday as speculation intensified over who will be the next young actor to slip into Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s old Spidey tights and tackle the role of Peter Parker and his alter ego in the next film in the “Spider-Man” franchise.

Turns out the race is led by Tom Holland (“The Impossible,” “Locke,” “Wolf Hall”) and Charlie Plummer (“Boardwalk Empire”), with Matthew Lintz (“Kill The Messenger”) still considered something of a possibility. A new name that cropped up Monday was Charlie Rowe (“The Golden Compass,” “Never Let Me Go”), but Holland is still thought to have the edge.

The actual announcement by Sony will be coming soon, as the new Spider-Man needs to be introduced in “Captain America: Civil War” (opening July 28, 2017) that is currently filming in Atlanta. It’s expected that lucky actor will need to be on set by this July — so the news should break any day now.
