A42-year-oldconstruction worker from Chicagowas shot to death while working in South Holland Friday afternoon.

Shortly after noon, Sergio Varela and two other workers were rehabbing a vacant house at 4 E. 157th St. when three other men walked up and tried to rob them, according to South Holland police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

A struggle ensued and one of the robbers repeatedly shot Varela, authorities said.

Varela, of the 2700 block of South St. Louis, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where he later died.

The other two construction workers weren’t hurt, police said. The shooters remain at large.
