A man was shot by Crystal Lake police after he allegedly charged at an officer with a knife early Monday in the northwest suburb.
Officers initially responded to a domestic battery at a home in the 300 block of West Terra Cotta Avenue (Route 176) about 11:10 p.m. Sunday, according to a statement from the Crystal Lake police department.
A man in his late 20s had battered a female family member and threatened her with a knife, police said. He fled the scene before officers arrived. The woman was treated at the scene for injuries she suffered to her face.
A few hours later, officers responded to another home in the 800 block of Boxwood Drive about 1:35 a.m., police said.
The suspect from the domestic battery had entered the home on Boxwood Drive against the wishes of the residents, including the woman hurt in the earlier incident.
The officers entered the home and one officer was confronted by the man, who was armed with a knife and charged at the officer, according to the statement. The officer fired his weapon, striking the suspect at least one time.
The suspect was taken to Centegra Hospital in Woodstock, where he is undergoing treatment Monday morning, according to police. His condition was not released.
The officer was taken as a precaution to Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, where he was treated and released.
According to the statement, the officer has been placed on administrative leave, “which is standard practice in this type of incident.”
Illinois State Police are investigating the shooting.
“The Crystal Lake Police Department will cooperate and assist to the fullest extent possible,” according to the statement.
