A 20-year-old man was fatally shot and another person wounded in a shooting early Wednesday in northwest Indiana.

Officers responded to a call of shots fired just after 1 a.m. in the 5200 block of Melton Road and found the body of a man who had been shot sitting in a vehicle, according to Gary police and the Lake County coroner’s office.

Jonathan Farries, who lived a mile away in the 5600 block of East 5th Place, was pronounced dead at the scene, the coroner’s office said. He died of a gunshot wound, and his death was ruled a homicide.

Officers searched the area and found another male victim who had been shot, and he was taken to a hospital for treatment, police said.

Investigators learned the shooting happened after an argument inside a business in the 5200 block of East Dunes Highway.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Lake County Metro Homicide Unit at (219) 755-3851.

Farries’ death is the third shooting death ruled a homicide in the last week in Gary.
