A Chicago woman was killed in a six-vehicle crash Sunday afternoon on I-80 in rural Grundy County.
The crash happened in the westbound lanes of I-80 at Route 47 at 1:22 p.m. in Morris, according to Illinois State Police.
A Chevrolet Cruz was eastbound in the right lane of I-80 when it changed lanes in front of a Jeep Liberty that was also eastbound in the left lane, police said. The Liberty swerved to the left and drove off the roadway, through the center median ditch and went airborne into the westbound lanes.
The Liberty then crashed into four other vehicles, causing a chain-reaction crash that involved a sixth vehicle, police said.
The driver of the Liberty, 66-year-old Linda Baines of Chicago, was taken to Morris Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said.
Three other people, one driver and two passengers, were hurt in the chain-reaction crash and were taken to hospitals, police said.
The driver of the Cruz, a 34-year-old Morris man, was cited for improper lane usage, police said.
Lanes were closed for about four hours and reopened at 5:30 p.m., police said.
Morris is about 21 miles southwest of Joliet.
