A man shot by police after charging at an officer with a knife last week in northwest suburban Crystal Lake has now charged with attempted murder.

Joseph Laudicina, 29, whose last known address was in the 1100 block of North Fischer Drive in Addison, is now charged with attempted murder and residential burglary, Crystal Lake police announced Monday.

He was previously charged with with home invasion, vehicular invasion, and two counts of aggravated domestic battery, all felonies, police said.

Officers initially responded to a domestic battery at a home in the 300 block of West Terra Cotta Avenue (Route 176) about 11:10 p.m. on June 21.

Laudicina had struck a female family member several times in the face, choked her and threatened to kill her while armed with a knife, a statement from police said. He fled the scene before officers arrived, and the woman was treated at the scene for her injuries.

A few hours later, officers responded to another home in the 800 block of Boxwood Drive about 1:35 a.m. Laudicina had entered that home against the wishes of the residents, including the woman hurt in the earlier incident, police said.

Police entered the home and one officer was confronted by Laudicina, who was armed with a knife when he charged at the officer, according to the statement. The officer fired his weapon, striking Laudicina at least once.

He was taken to Centegra Hospital in Woodstock, where he remained hospitalized as of Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The officer was taken as a precaution to Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, where he was treated and released.

According to the statement, the officer has been placed on administrative leave, “which is standard practice in this type of incident.”

Laudicina’s bond was set at $125,000 for the new charges, in addition to the $300,000 bond set last week, according to police.
