Todd Carlander’s Hi Utsuri koi is a first for FOTW and one of the most beautiful.

He caught it Sunday from a little suburban park lake he only knows as “Longfinne Pond,’’ which I am pretty sure is word play on New World.

“I don’t know how the fish got in there, because the pond was totally winterkilled two years ago [after the historic 2013-14 winter],’’ said Carlander, a Northwest Side man who is one of Chicago’s top fishermen.

The koi was caught on a Richworth-flavored plastic fished on hair.

FOTW, the celebration of big fish and good stories around Chicago fishing, appears Wednesdays on the Sun-Times outdoors page.
