John Bowlen Jr., the son of Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen, was arrested for domestic violence Wednesday in Colorado — while wearing a Broncos shirt — according to a report from TMZ Sports.
He is being held at the Arapahoe County jail outside of Denver on suspicion of third degree assault and harassment, according to the report.
According to the police report, the victim told police John was under the influence of whippets and alcohol. Whippets is slang for nitrous oxide. The woman — who says she has been dating Bowlen for 10 months — says the two were inside of John’s apartment when John began acting strange and shoved her against the wall. The woman says she called 911, but John took the phone and hung up. When the operator called back, John reportedly answered and said, This is the owner of the Denver Broncos. I am sorry. K. Nothing is wrong. This is John Bowlen.
The Broncos released the following statement:
“We are disappointed to learn of the matter involving John Bowlen, who is a son of Owner Pat Bowlen and an administrative employee with the organization. While this is a personal issue, he is accountable to all club and league conduct policies. As such, John will be placed on an indefinite leave of absence from the organization.”
As TMZ notes, Bowlen isn’t the first son of a Broncos executive to be arrested on domestic violence charges. John Elway’s son was arrested one year ago.
The arrest is the latest in a spate of domestic violence charges around the NFL that have received increased scrutiny after the Ray Rice videotape.
