A homicide investigation is underway after a person was pronounced dead in northwest Indiana early Sunday.

Forensic investigators were called about 11 p.m. Saturday to the 4000 block of Calumet Avenue in Hammond, according to a statement from the Lake County coroner’s office.

The person–an unidentified black female–was declared dead just after midnight Sunday, authorities said.

Her preliminary manner of death was ruled a homicide but her specific injuries have not been released pending further studies.

Hammond police could not immediately be reached for details.
