A man accused of pointing a handgun at a police officer in the West Town neighborhood on Sunday has been ordered held on a $90,000 bond.
Rafael Corona, 29, is facing one felony count each of being an armed habitual criminal; unlawful possession of a firearm by a street gang member; unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and aggravated assault to an officer. He was also charged with drinking alcohol on a public way, a misdemeanor.
Police said Corona pointed a handgun at an officer as police responded to a call of a gang disturbance a few minutes after midnight on Sunday in the 1700 block of North Talman. “In fear of his safety,” the officer shot his gun once without striking Corona, police said.
Corona was arrested at the scene and a gun was recovered, police said. No other injuries were reported.
Corona, of the 1700 block of North Rockwell, was ordered held on a $90,000 bond at a hearing Monday, court records show. He will be back in court June 15 for a preliminary hearing.
