Production is under way on “Southside With You,” a romantic dramedy said to be “inspired by” the 1989 date when Obama took his future wife (and future first lady) to the Art Institute of Chicago, to a screening of Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing” and to Baskin Robbins, where they shared their first kiss.

Parker Sawyer, who had bit parts in “Kick-Ass 2” and “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,” plays Obama, with Tika Sumpter, a co-star of “Ride Along” and OWN’s “The Haves and Have Nots.”

Richard Tanne, who wrote the screenplay, is making his directorial debut with the project, produced by State Street Pictures, the company behind the Chicago-based “Barbershop” franchise, and IM Global.
