Chris Sale may not pitch in All-Star Game after all

White Sox ace Chris Sale has been bounced back and forth by American League managers with regard to Tuesday night’s All-Star Game.

It looks now like Sale will only enter the game in case of emergency, says AL manager Ned Yost.

White Sox manager Robin Ventura originally said he’d prefer if Chris Sale didn’t pitch to save the left-hander’s arm for the rest of the Sox’ season.

American League manager Ned Yost later said he spoke to Ventura and decided to pitch Sale because “the world kind of wants to see him pitch.”

But Yost reversed course Tuesday afternoon, telling the media that Sale would only pitch in an emergency, according to the Kansas City Star.

Sale has thrown 108 pitches or more in every start dating back to May 6. He threw 115 pitches in seven innings against the Cubs on Saturday.

White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper said Monday that he also preferred Sale not pitch.

“From the pitching coach’s perspective, I’m somebody who shares but I don’t like to share my toys,’’ Cooper told the Sun-Times Monday. “I wish that he didn’t have to throw in the All-Star Game. Because if my focus is keeping this kid healthy, I don’t want him having to crank it up another day. That’s ours. I want him to be ready to run the five-, six-day race for the Chicago White Sox.’’
