A bicyclist who was fatally struck by a Metra train Tuesday evening near west suburban Riverside has been identified as a Lyons man.

Outbound BNSF train No. 1373 hit a person “trespassing” on the tracks near Harlem Avenue about 6:45 p.m., Metra spokesman Tom Miller said.

Jose Arguello, 24, of the 7300 block of Pershing Road in Lyons was dead at the scene, according to a statement from Riverside police.

An outbound commuter train was stopped and disembarking passengers at the Harlem Avenue stop and blocking the crossing, police said.

Arguellowent around a downed railroad gates with the lights flashing and was struck by a westbound express Metra train traveling on the center track.

The express train went into emergency braking when the bicyclist went around the gates, but was unable to stop and struck him, police said.

Several witnesses at the scene saw the crash and gave statements to police about what happened.

Arguello was wearing a headset at the time of the crash, and it was recovered at the scene, police said.

Trains were halted in both directions at Harlem for more than 2 1/2 hours,authorities said.
