Kris Bryant merchandise is the top seller among major-league players. Not Mike Trout merchandise. Not Bryce Harper merchandise.

That should blow you away, but I’m guessing it doesn’t as we sit here at the epicenter of the Bryant earthquake. Chicago has been on an all-out Bryant watch since the Cubs drafted him second overall in the 2013 draft.

But nationally the rookie is a big deal too. Why? Maybe for his 12 homers, 51 runs batted in and .373 on-base percentage, but certainly not for his .263 batting average. More likely, it’s a combination of things, including his immense potential, the huge following the Cubs have around the country, the team’s real chance at a wild-card berth and his good looks. Add it all up, and you can see why people have gone from zero to Lou Gehrig in half a season with the kid.

It helps explain the huge clamoring for any items related to Bryant, as if they were a saint’s relics. Hmmmm. St. Kristopher, patron saint of This Could Be The Year.
