Veteran catcher David Ross has taken rookie Kyle Schwarber under his wing since being called up on July 17, and Ross couldn’t be more happy for the rookie’s success.

Before Tuesday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds, Ross said Schwarber is quickly learning and is impressive at the plate.

He obviously is a very talented player, Ross said. He’s a good kid. He asks a lot of questions, and he’s real receptive. The word you hear tossed around is ‘sponge.’ He takes it all in. He’s got a lot of leadership qualities. He’s impressive for a young guy.

After Schwarber hit the game-winning home run in the top of the 13th inning on Tuesday, the first person to congratulate Schwarber after the game was Ross.
