A 16-year-old boy was killed and a 17-year-old boy was seriously wounded in a shooting in the South Chicago neighborhood Monday evening.

The two were standing outside in the 7900 block of South Merrill about 5:30 p.m. when a red vehicle pulled up and a male got out and shot them, police said. The gunman got back in the vehicle, which then sped off.

The younger boy was shot several times and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The other teen was shot in the back and taken to South Shore Hospital in serious condition.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office confirmed the death but did not release the boy’s death pending notification of family Monday night.
