SHARE 16-year-old boy shot to death in South Chicago identified

A 16-year-old boy killed in a shooting that also woundeda 17-year-old boy Monday eveningin the South Chicago neighborhoodhas been identified.

The two were standing outside in the 7900 block of South Merrill about 5:30 p.m. when a red vehicle pulled up and a male suspect got out and shot them, police said. The gunman got back into the vehicle, which then sped off.

The 16-year-old, identified as Abayomi Okanlawan, was shot several times and pronounced dead at the scene at 6:05 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He lived on the same block where the shooting happened.

The other teen was shot in the back and was taken to South Shore Hospital in serious condition, police said.
