A 43-year-old man is in critical condition after he was stabbed while intervening in a fight early Sunday in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side.

About 1 a.m., he tried to step between two people in a physical altercation in the 500 block of North Leclaire when one of them stabbed him in the abdomen, police News Affairs Officer Ron Gaines said.

The 43-year-old was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition, Gaines said.

A person was taken into custody, but was later released without being charged, police said.
