Cubs in no rush to make August trade with team on roll

With an 8-1 start to the month through Tuesday, the Cubs don’t feel a great sense of urgency to change the mix of the clubhouse or roster pieces that seem to be working.

Team president Theo Epstein didn’t rule out making a move during the August waiver period, before playoff rosters are locked in.

But it may not be anything as sexy as landing veteran All-Star second baseman Chase Utley, who finally looks healthy after playing on an injured ankle much of the season.

“Sometimes you get things done right at the end of the month,” Epstein said. “Maybe a designated pinch runner, something like that. Or if you add some veteran presence. But there’s nothing that we’re really close to.”

Epstein won’t comment on specific players.

The Cubs, who are among at least three teams pursuing Utley in talks with the Phillies, appear to be trailing other teams in the mix.

The Giants advanced far enough in the process to be exchanging names with the Phillies, according to reports from San Francisco Wednesday.

Utley has cleared waivers and can be dealt without fear of other teams attempting to block a trade – though he also has full no-trade rights.
