Philadelphia Phillies second baseman Chase Utley cleared waivers on Tuesday, which makes him eligible for trade.
The Cubs are rumored to be in the market for a veteran second baseman and according to ESPN baseball analyst Jim Bowden, the Cubs are one of four possible suitors to acquire Utley.
The 36-year-old second baseman is hitting .196 with four home runs and 28 RBI in 70 games this season. But since returning from a sprained ankle injury, Utley is hitting .412 with three doubles and three runs scored.
Among the other clubs that are considering trading for the Phillies second baseman, the San Francisco Giants have reportedly shown the most interest.
