A major track improvement project on Metra’s Rock Island line will cause schedule changes and delays for commuters in the South and Southwest suburbs starting Monday through late October.

Metra crews will be replacing 17,500 ties and resurfacing tracks over a 25-mile stretch between Blue Island and Joliet, according to a statement from the city of Joliet.

Work will continue seven days a week, mostly between the morning and evening rush to minimize impacts to riders, the statement said.

Starting Monday, a construction schedule will be in effect for midday trains, and riders should expect delays of about 10 minutes, the statement said. Some rush hour trains may also experience delays because of slower speeds required in work zones.

People who live near the Rock Island tracks may also hear noise from construction equipment and horns from trains passing thorough construction areas, the statement said.

The construction schedule is expected to last through Oct. 25.
