An armed robber who was shot to death by a convenience store clerk Sunday night in northwest suburban Wauconda has been identified.
The masked man, armed with a gun, entered the Kwick Shop at 112 E. Liberty St. in Wauconda a few minutes after 9 p.m. and demanded money from the clerk and a patron, according to Wauconda police.
The patron ran out of the store when the 24-year-old clerk pulled a firearm from a “hidden location” and shot the intruder, who fell to the ground, police said.
The alleged robber, identified as 30-year-old Justin Greenenwald of Ingleside, was taken to Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, where he was pronounced dead at 9:42 p.m., according to police and the Lake County coroner’s office.
Greenenwald suffered four gunshot wounds to his upper chest, right hip, left hip and left eye, according to Lake County Coroner Dr. Thomas Rudd.
Rudd said Greenenwald was armed with an air gun during the robbery.
According to police, Greenenwald was on parole for a 2011 armed robbery conviction and had previous convictions for armed robbery, drug offenses and theft.
The Lake County state’s attorney and Wauconda police are investigating the incident.
