A 15-year-old girl was shot to death while sitting in a vehicle Sunday night in northwest Indiana.

Daja Brookshire was sitting in the back seat of a vehicle at 9: 30 p.m. when she, the driver and the front-seat passenger noticed they were being followed by an unidentified car near 7th Avenue and Adams Street in Gary, Ind., Gary police Sgt. Thomas Decanter said.

Someone then fired shots from the unknown vehicle, striking Brookshire, Decanter said. The driver took her to Methodist Hospital Northlake, where she died in the emergency room.

Brookshire, of the 800 block of North County Line Road in Gary, died of a single gunshot wound, and her death was ruled a homicide.
