After the Cubs—Pirates game was postponed in the 5th inning on Monday, Cubs manager Joe Maddon will allow Jon Lester to pitch on four days rest against the San Francisco Giants.

Lester only threw two innings on Monday before the game was delayed and didn’t return after the tarp was pulled.

The Cubs start a crucial four-games series against the Giants on Thursday, and it’s important for Maddon to have his best pitchers during the series. The Giants are currently one-game back from the Cubs for the second wild card spot.

Lester hasn’t pitched against the Giants this season, but the lefty has a 1.61 ERA with 27 strikeouts since the All-Star break.
