A woman was killed and a second person seriously hurt in a shooting Monday night in northwest Indiana.

The two were shot at 25th and Clark Street in Gary about 8 p.m., according to Gary Police Sgt. Thomas Decanter.

Both were taken to Methodist Hospital Northlake in Gary, Decanter said.

The woman, identified as 27-year-old Valerie Gonzalez of the 600 block of Garry Street in Gary, was shot in the chest and pronounced dead at 8:38 p.m., according to Decanter and the Lake County coroner’s office.

The male victim, whose age was not released, was shot in the right side of his head above the eye and is in serious but “stable” condition, Decanter said.
