Cubs catcher Miguel Montero was activated from the 15-day disabled list after injuring his thumb on July 11 against the White Sox.

The Cubs optioned outfielder Matt Szczur to Triple-A Iowa and made room for Montero. Szczur was hitting .217 with one home run and eight RBI through 35 games this season.

Montero will join the catcher rotation of rookie Kyle Schwarber and veteran David Ross. With the addition of Montero, Schwarber may see more time in the outfield.

Montero will make his first start since being injured on Saturday.
