A south suburban man was seriously injured when his motorcycle ran off the road Thursday night on I-65 in northwest Indiana.

The 25-year-old Lansing man was driving a 2001 silver and black Suzuki motorcycle on I-65 just north of the ramp to westbound I-80 about 10:45 p.m. Thursday when he ran off the road, according to Indiana State Police.

Witnesses said the motorcyclist appeared to be trying to merge onto the exit ramp and may have misjudged the exit, police said. The motorcycle went into a grassy area between the interstate and the exit ramp, and the driver was ejected.

He was initially taken to Northlake Hospital in Gary, but was transferred to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood with life-threatening injuries, police said.

Troopers recovered suspected narcotics in the motorcyclist’s backpack, and impairment may have been a contributing factor in the crash, police said.

No charges have been filed. Indiana State Police are continuing to investigate.
