A 21-year-old woman died early Thursday after being shot in south suburban Calumet City.

Samantha Springer was walking into her home in the 300 block of South Pulaski Road in Calumet City with another person when a male suspect walked up and greeted her, according to Calumet City Police Chief Edward Gilmore and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Springer and the male exchanged a few words and then he shot her, Gilmore said.

Springer was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:13 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office. An autopsy found she died of multiple gunshot wounds.

Gilmore said Springer was the girlfriend of a known gang member and the shooting may be gang-related.

Police are not releasing a description of the suspect. No one was in custody as of Thursday afternoon.

Anyone with information about the shooting should call investigators at (708) 868-2500.
