A man armed with a gun tried to rob a person withdrawing money from a drive-through ATM Wednesday night in north suburban Northbrook.

A man was withdrawing money from the Chase Bank ATM at Dundee and Pfingsten about 9:45 p.m. when the suspect walked up to the vehicle, opened the door and pointed a handgun, according to Northbrook police.

The victim then put his vehicle into drive and pulled out of the drive-through without being robbed, police said. He drove to another location and called 911.

Officers responded to the bank, but the robber had already fled.

He was described as a black man in his 20s, between 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-10, 180 pounds with short black hair and brown eyes. He was wearing dark clothing and a black bandanna with white markings covering his face from the nose down.

Several other suburbs have reported similar incidents in the last few weeks, all of which too place between 9-11 p.m., police said.

Residents are reminded to keep vehicles locked and to be aware of anyone approaching while using an ATM.
