Delle Donne wins community leadership award again

Elena Delle Donne is having a pretty good year on the court. She’s done even better work away from the game, and once again the WNBA is recognizing the Sky star for her efforts.

For the second straight year, Delle Donne is the winner of the Dawn Staley Community Leadership Award. Delle Donne is a national ambassador for the Lyme Research Alliance, and a global ambassador for the Special Olympics.

“I strive to use the unique position I’m in to help make a difference in people’s lives, and I’m thankful to the WNBA, Special Olympics, Global Lyme Alliance and Dawn for encouraging me to do so,” Delle Donne said in a statement. “By sharing my own experiences, I have been able to help educate and inspire others to overcome their personal challenges, and I will always continue doing that.”

Delle Donne will be honored Sunday when the Sky host Seattle.

“Elena’s passion and dedication to her community are truly extraordinary,” WNBA president Laurel J. Richie said in a statement. “Her deep desire to help those around her inspires every person she meets, and she has distinguished herself as a true leader.”

Adailton out

The Fire announced Wednesday that central defender Adailton will be out approximately six-to-eight weeks after undergoing a “core muscle repair procedure” Tuesday.

Brought in to help settle the back line, Adailton has been prone to gaffes. He scored two own-goals in the Fire’s June 6 loss to Orlando City, and didn’t handle a simple low cross that allowed the New England Revolution to equalize in the 77th minute of a 2-2 draw on July 25.

Adailton hasn’t played since that appearance against New England.

The USA Rugby Eagles will face Australia’s Wallabies on Saturday at Soldier Field. The game kicks off at 6:30 p.m. and will be carried live on NBC Sports Network.

Tickets are available through Ticketmaster, and also usarugby.org.

Attendance is not expected to approach last year’s event, when the Eagles hosted the New Zealand All Blacks in front of a capacity Soldier Field crowd.
