A man died after he was shot on New Year’s Day in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side.

Donzell M. Davis, 36, was shot in the chest in the 1900 block of West Garfield at 6:40 a.m., according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Davis was driven to 55th Street and Artesian before he was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about 40 minutes later, according to the medical examiner’s office. He lived in the 9700 block of South Indiana.

An autopsy found he died of a gunshot wound to the back and his death was ruled a homicide.
