A mother and daughter were able to fend off an armed robber Tuesday night in their driveway in northwest suburban Elgin.

At 8:47 p.m., a 49-year-old woman and her 16-year-old daughter were sitting in a car in their driveway in the 100 block of North Jane Drive when a male armed with a gun opened the driver’s side door and demanded the woman’s purse and cell phone, according to a statement from Elgin police.

The woman did not give the suspect her purse or cell phone, and began to yell and activate the vehicle’s emergency button, police said. The suspect hit the woman in the head with the gun and ran away, police said. The woman suffered minor injuries.

The suspect is described as a black man in his early 20s, standing 5-foot-7, weighing 150 pounds with an average build. He has short black hair and was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, police said.

Anyone with information about the attempted robbery is asked to contact the Elgin Police Department’s Major Investigations Division at (847) 289-2600.
