A West Chicago man with a criminal history has been charged after police found a gun and ammunition in his home during a search Friday.

Salvador Perez, 28, was charged with one felony count of possession of a weapon by a felon after authorities found a .40 caliber gun and ammunition in his home in the 400 block of East Blair Street in West Chicago, according to a statement from the West Chicago Police Department.

Police searched Perez’s home after a month-long investigation into suspected criminal activity and a Dec. 20, 2015 shooting, police said.

“This investigation was the result of tenacity and excellent police work on the part of all of our officers”, said West Chicago Police Chief Michael Uplegger in the statement. “I am proud of the work they did in taking a criminal off the street and helping a neighborhood regain the safety we all deserve.”

Perez will be transported to the DuPage County Jail to await a bond hearing. If convicted, he will face between two and 10 years in prison, police said.
