Baby found safe in backseat after Cicero carjacking

A baby strapped into the backseat of an SUV that was stolen from west suburban Cicero on Wednesday morning was later found safe on the West Side of Chicago.

About 8:30 a.m., a woman dropped her preschool daughter off at Liberty School at 13th Street and 50th Avenue in Cicero; and left her Dodge Durango running and double-parked with a 1-year-old in the backseat and the keys in the ignition, according to a statement from Cicero village spokesman Ray Hanania.

As the woman got to the school door, she saw a man jump into the driver’s side of her Durango and speed off down the street, Hanania said. The Durango headed north on 50th and then turned right on Roosevelt Road.

Cicero police responded and conducted a block-by-block search heading eastward.

The Durango was later found in the 1200 block of South Kildare in Chicago with the engine still running and the baby in the backseat, Hanania said.

The suspect was described as a black man in his early to mid-20s, about 5-foot-11 to 6-foot with a mustache, Hanania said. He was wearing black pants, black shirt and black hooded jacket. He was last seen running northbound across Roosevelt from Kildare.
