A 21-year-old man was shot to death Monday morning along a Safe Passage route in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side.

Jeffrey A. Mattix, 21, was shot multiple times in the chest just after 8:20 a.m. in the 300 block of North Central Avenue, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Mattix, who lived a block away in the 400 block of North Central, was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he died at 8:58 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.

The block where the shooting happened lies on a Safe Passage route for Ellington Elementary School at 243 N. Parkside Ave., according to the Chicago Public Schools website. The scene of the shooting is less than two blocks from the school.

Police believe the shooting was gang-related.
