A person is in custody in connection with the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old man late Wednesday in south suburban Chicago Heights.

Fredrick Mack was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the chest in a first-floor apartment in the 400 block of West 15th Street about 11:30 p.m., according to a statement from Chicago Heights police.

Mack was taken to St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights, where he was pronounced dead at 12:12 a.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He lived in the 200 block of West Hickory Street in Chicago Heights.

Police have a person of interest in custody for the shooting, the statement said.

Illinois State Police and the South Suburban Major Crimes Task Force are also investigating. Anyone with information should call Chicago Heights police at (708) 756-6434.

The woman, 18, was driving a car with three passengers at a restaurant when a man on a bike approached and began arguing with them before shooting, police said.
