The death of a 40-year-old man in the Pilsen neighborhood this past summer has been ruled a homicide.
Javier Martinez died at 4:23 p.m. June 5 at the University of Illinois Hospital after he was assaulted in the 1500 block of West 18th Street, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
An autopsy did not rule immediately on cause and manner of death, but the medical examiner’s office has since determined he died of acute subarachnoid (brain) hemorrhage due to a ruptured cerebral artery aneurysm.
Blunt force injuries to the head from an assault, along with ethanol and cocaine intoxication were listed as contributing factors, according to the medical examiner’s office. His death was ruled a homicide.
Chicago Police officers were called to the hospital for a death investigation, but there was no information about what happened leading to Martinez’s death, police said.
