Two boys and three girls were arrested Tuesday evening after they were caught driving in a stolen van in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side.

About 6:25 p.m., officers on patrol spotted the juveniles in the van driving through an alley near North Lamon and West Maypole avenues, according to Chicago Police.

The vehicle’s license plate revealed that the van was reported stolen about 1:40 p.m. Sunday from the 5900 block of West Madison, police said. When the officers tried to stop the vehicle, the juveniles tried to run away, but were eventually taken into custody.

One boy was charged with possession of a stolen vehicle, a felony, police said. The other boy and three girls were all charged with misdemeanor criminal trespass to a vehicle. Their names were not released because of their ages.

The van was then returned to the owner, police said.
